Job Description

Te Omanga is more than just a hospice. 

We are looking for an experienced Registered Nurse to join our Community Nursing Team. This is a position that requires palliative care knowledge and experience working in the community. 

The role has autonomy and flexibility, with strong support from the wider hospice multi-disciplinary team. Key to this role is the ability to build relationships with patients, whanau and primary care providers in the community. Other essential attributes include confidence in palliative care knowledge, an interest in educating, and the ability to apply a holistic approach when working with patients and families in the community.

Our Community Nursing Team provides specialist palliative care support to people living at home with a life limiting illness. They provide a holistic person centred approach to care.  Using an integrated approach with primary care our nurses focus on specialist palliative care symptom management and support people to remain at home for as long as they are able. Our Community Nurses are an integral part of our multi discipline team (MDT) working closely with medical staff and our allied health partners.

Desired Skills and Experience

To be considered for this role, you must have the following attributes:

  • NZRN or Overseas equivalent
  • Current Practising Certificate
  • Current clean and full New Zealand Drivers License
  • Flexibility
  • Able to demonstrate an awareness of boundaries and critical issues and able to function in a safe, responsible manner
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and prioritise patient and family/whanau needs
  • Ability to work in a self motivated and self directed manner
  • Ability to work in partnership with patients and their family/whanau and to respect their preferences and choices
  • Understanding of, and demonstrated ability to apply the concept of cultural and spiritual safety
  • Understanding of the grief process
  • Awareness of current trends in palliative care
  • Understanding and commitment to the Hospice philosophy
  • Alignment and affinity with Te Omanga Hospice values: Partnership, Dignity, Professionalism  and Compassion
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education
  • Leadership qualities and abilities
  • Computer literacy – keyboard, data entry
  • Sense of humour
  • Ability to work in a close supportive team environment often in a stressful situation
  • Compassionate, calm, supportive, cooperative and confident
  • No recent personal bereavement
  • Willing to recognise stress and use support systems
