Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Kaiāwhina to join our team for this 24 hour per week role.  The Kaiāwhina plays a crucial role in supporting Māori patients and their whānau accessing hospice services. This position ensures that the person and their whānau are at the heart of care assessments and decisions, respecting their preferences and needs in relation to Tikanga Māori, diverse whānau experiences, and communication preferences. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Patient and Whānau Support: Provide holistic support to Māori patients and their whānau, ensuring their cultural preferences and needs are understood and respected. 

  • Orientation: Guide patients and whānau through hospice services, environment, and resources, with a focus on tikanga, wairua, whakawhanaungatanga, and manaakitanga. 

  • Relationship Building: Foster positive relationships with Hutt Valley Iwi, regional Māori Palliative Care partners, Māori health providers, and hospice teams. Participate in relevant committees and consult with Māori health liaison workers, community, and Iwi representatives. 

  • Community Engagement: Ensure the local community is well-informed about hospice services. 

  • Bereavement Support: Provide information and support for tangi and bereavement, connecting whānau with community resources and key providers who care for Tūpāpanuku. 

  • Service Development: Contribute to service development and delivery in line with the Te Omanga Hospice Māori Health Plan. Participate in Clinical Governance and advocate for positive care outcomes for Māori. 

  • Staff Support: Assist in mihi whakatau for new staff and volunteers alongside other hospice staff.   Assist the Te Omanga Team to grow in their knowledge of Māori Tikanga along with the Te Mahau Rōpu. 

Te Tiriti o Waitangi 

Service activity, development and implementation is undertaken in accordance with the TOH Māori Health Plan, the provisions of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and Mauri Mate: A Māori Palliative Care Framework for hospice.   Te Omanga Hospice acknowledges the unique partnership with Māori as tangata whenua of Aotearoa/New Zealand. 

Desired Skills and Experience

Essential Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong understanding of Tikanga Māori and Māori health practices. 

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. 

  • Experience in a healthcare or community support role is preferred. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and communities. 

  • Commitment to advocating for positive care outcomes for Māori. 

  • Relevant health or social service qualification, e.g. Health Sciences, Social Work or National Certificate in Hauora, Community Development, Māori Studies. 

Desirable 

  • Strong community networks with local iwi and marae. 

  • Experience working in palliative care. 

Please note that a Practicing Certificate is not essential for this role.
